Playboy in Indonesia?

I appeared on the cover of Playboy, Spain edition last August. I think everyone and their mothers know about that if you live in Indonesia. Lets just get that fact out in the open. Now, I have this blog for a reason and one of them is to be a medium for my voice for matters that concern me most. This is one of those moments.

I have been asked by a large number of Indonesian media about two things:
1. How do you feel about Playboy being published in Indonesia?
2. How do you feel about potentially appearing as the first cover of Playboy Indonesia?

I respect Playboy as an internationally known publication. Everyone from legendary Marilyn Monroe to Pamela Anderson to Madonna to Cindy Crawford have benefited from their professional relationships with the magazine. I have made a personal decision as a model to also follow that route last year. This decision certainly wasn't popular in my own country. Heck, it was a huge disappointment for my parents too. I regret that part of it. For that, I am sorry.

For my parents who I love very much, and for them alone, I have made another personal decision to not pursue that line of work anymore. Being on the cover of Playboy can be considered peak of any model's career. As they say, "Been there done that."

However, I was aware of one thing; I appeared in a country that does not consider Playboy and nudity as taboo. My appearance was never intended for consumption of Indonesia. How many Indonesians do you now read Playboy Spain? My pictures circulating on the internet happened without my being consulted. I do not have rights to those pictures. Not offending my countrymen was one of the criteria of my decision making process in appearing in Playboy Spain.

So now we are going to have Playboy Indonesia. It's hard to imagine a magazine with a very specific and uncompromising character published in a country where the same character is considered taboo. Why I ask? I am just a model, but when people ask my personal opinion about Playboy Indonesia, that would be my short answer. I mean really, what kind of content adjustment do they need to make so Playboy can be accepted by Indonesians? That is like asking TIME magazine to only do gossip or Hollywood celebrities news. Not gonna happen.

If you were to put gado-gado in McDonald, they would probably call it Mac-Gado-gado. Whatever content adjustment that is planned for Playboy Indonesia, it is still Playboy magazine. Period.

Should Indonesian Government stop Playboy from appearing? No. Especially if Playboy Indonesia already have legal documents to publish the mag. Should Indonesians who are unhappy with having Playboy in Indonesia voice their opinions? Absolutely. I am proud the fact that Indonesia, in many cases, can be considered more democratic than even the US. Heck, we vote our President directly, Americans do not. So let us debate without hurting each other. Be angry using our voice instead of our fists. You don't like Playboy in Indonesia, speak with your wallet. Don't buy it.

So, should Playboy be in Indonesia? In my personal opinion, I do not believe they should until TIME magazine started to write about Hollywood celebrities only :)

How do I feel about potentially being on the first cover of Playboy Indonesia? Just like my pictures circulating on the Internet... not much I can do about it. I do not have rights of my old pictures, so they can requests those pictures without my approval. If Playboy Indonesia ask me to be on the first cover, I will humbly decline such request.

There ya go.. my personal opinion.

There was a line in all choices and as long u dun hit the wrong nerve.Modelling is short lived but if u could prove many of the masses who had misinterpret since Playboy Spain bet u still clean the stain that linger.so been there done that is a question of to be proud or a question of pride and the prejudice of the masses?

I have read in the press that the publisher has agreed to do without any nudity in the Indonesian edition of Playboy as they respect the fact that Indonesia is a Muslim country and its people generally have very conservative views concerning pornography. If they won't shoot you in the nude, will you still decline to appear on the Indonesian edition of Playboy? :)

    Hi Tiara,
Where did you get the idea that Americans don't vote their president and vice president? They heve been voting their presidents since a long time ago while Indonesians have had just started 2 years ago.
Don't get me wrong, I said this not because I am not proud of Indonesia, I really am. I just want to correct some facts, that's all.

I imagine the magazine will be similar in format to FHM, Popular, Maxim, etc. They can't fool us though, we know what's under those bikinis, right fellas? Indonesia needs another one of these vapant rags like I need testicular cancer.

Guy from NYC, American people don't put their president in office, the electoral college does.

Indocoup... I love reading your blog, but for the love of christ man, are you still all wound up because Tiara didn't link back to you way back when? Quit being such a trite little crybaby.

Tiara, if you want to be a successful model/actress outside of Indonesia, I think you'd be making a mistake by not being on that cover, especially since you wouldn't have to strip down... However, if your goal is to one day return to Indonesia to act/model, you probably made the right call.

    Adieu

    Everyone,

Thanks for all your comments. And I do mean ALL. For me, this whole thing simply comes down to two things:
    1. My Personal Decision about appearing in PB Spain. and;
    2. My Personal Opinion about Playboy Indonesia.

    Hell, what do I know...I'm a just a model :)

I do know that censorship is wrong from any point of view. You see the way I run my Blog; people can say whatever they want to say. Even the stupid ones….

Here's my gift to both sides of the argument:

For those who are for Playboy Indonesia:

You have a lot of weight on your shoulders! Not wanting to offend your parents and your countrymen.

I am an asian-american that grew up in the US so I understand the conservative nature of asian parents, but I am not familiar with living in a conservative country.

Personally, as a parent, it would be difficult to see your child nude on the cover of a magazine, but if they truly love you, they should get over it.

As to your countrymen, well, you can't make everybody happy as you go through life. It is impossible. You seem like a very considerate person who takes everybody's feelings into consideration when you make a decision. That's fine, but understand there will always be some people who will not be happy with the decisions you make, especially as a public figure, and don't let that get you down. Life is hard enough without trying to make everybody happy. And if people don't respect your own choices in life, I say the heck with them.

You only live once! Are you going to make mistakes along the way? Heck yes, but everybody does! Don't dwell on them, learn from any mistakes and move on.

In 5-10 years from now, when you have a loving family of your own, it's my guess all this will probably not mean so much anyway.

Good Luck, you're pictures are beautiful!

What worries me about 'Playboy' magazine in Indonesia is that it will trigger more anti-american reation from the fanatics and fundamentalists here, heck even the moderates are screaming bloody murder even before seeing the magazine itself. The effect we're seeing now is not because of the content (like Binky said, it will most probably be like FHM and the sorts, still more polite than the local bikini tabloids) but because of what the brand or name represents.

It's like asking for trouble, slowly building an anti-american sentiment for even broader mass in the world's biggest muslim population. Personally I wish this won't happen. Not that I don't like Playboy, it's just the long term effect that scares me.

I still prefer the local bikini tabloids, they're more, uh, real. Hahahaha...

Tiara...choosing not to pose for more Playboy is all good...it's your choice and your decision should be respected.

I can't believe that there would be any shortage of women aspiring to launch their "career" with a respectable cover and tear sheets.

Out of respect for the Indonesian woman, would it be better for Playboy just feature someone like Pamela Anderson on their first cover? And speaking of Pam, how do Indonesians feel about women with silicone?

Let them publish their silly little skin magazine, let Islamic tempers rise over nothing other than a silly little 'brand name'... Let Tiara be on the cover of the first issue... Who gives a shit... In fact, any Indonesian girl will do. This country desparately needs something cohesive they can group together an and wave their mighty muslim fists at... Why they aren't irate over their own government is beyond me, but whatever...

I've been all around this great big world and I've never lived in a city so "stuck" in nuetral as the cesspool they call Jakarta. Bring on the scantily clad muslim girls! It can't make shit here on the street any worse than it already is.

Playboy Indonesia will only be around as long as it is profitable to publish and sell the magazine in the country. If it is not accepted by the people of Indonesia it will not be around very long.

Tiara and a few others have made comments about the manner in which US voters elect the President and Vice President. I will propose to all of you that the Electoral College system is actually better than a "popular vote" election decision. The Electoral System dates back to the early days of the USA when the country was very small with only a handful of states actually in the union all located along the Atlantic seaboard with major populations centers located around a few major cities like New York. The Electoral College was instituted to prevent one candidate from concentrating their efforts in one area of the country (like New York)to get a large portion of the local vote and carry the election. It would be possible then to win the election for President and carry only one or two states with a large percentage of the popular vote. The remianing states could be effectively ignored since the votes needed to win could be found in only one or two small areas. The Electoral College system effectively prevents this from occuring since most states award their entire elector slate to the winner of the popular vote within the state. If the popular vote system were used solely to elect the US President then a candidate would only have to carry California, New York, Illinois, Florida, Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania by large vote majorities to win the national election. The residents of the other 43 states could be effectively marginalized since they could not generate enough votes to counter the vote totals in the 7 primary states. I see the merits of both systems but only the Electoral College avoids the gaming that could be done if everything was decided by a simple vote count.

    William,

    That's a con, not a pro.

The scenario you describe wherein a candidate concentrates on key states carrying the largest electoral votes and/or the small handful of swing states where the vote could go either way to the occlusion of all other less "significant" states is exactly what happens today and is one of the main reasons cited in the demand for electoral reform.

A federal system of government of the people, by the people, for the people, provided you're one of the lucky people registered to vote in one of the top 14 states in the 51 state union.

Political science and Playboy. What a thread.

You will probably never read this, but I want to let you know the truth from a westerner's point of view, who lives in Jakarta. a) Playboy is not porn - those who want porn log onto the internet, they do not fork out dollars for a magazine that doesn't fuel their fantasies. b) Posing for Playboy will open you to squillions of creeps and wierdos, as the comments to your blog show. You have to learn to say f*** you to them and move on. c) Indonesians are such hypocrits; there are demos against Indo Playboy full of jilbabbed women who have no clue and have never seen it; men with 5 wives; religious leaders who only know the name but surf the dirty sites every day etc. d) If your main concern is the reaction of your parents, how did they happen to see PB Espanol? And how old are you? Do you really need to apologise to your parents for taking advantage of a wonderful gift?
The bottom line is that many people appreciate beauty such as you possess. It's up to you whether you grasp the opportunity or not. Personally I will visit wherever you happen to decide to model. I am a fan!

What reaaly is offensive is you cannot drink the water in Jakarta, mothers and 6 month old babies begging on dirty street corners..

im actually one of those who are pro-playboy indonesia, and in a way, i do think that this will cause a major up-roar, of course, since we are the biggest muslim country in the world.
but if you think about it, indonesia is a country of hypocrites. yes, they say that these things arent up to our norms, but if you investigate the houses of most indonesians you will find stacks of magazines, dvds, vcds, and pictures of things that can be "playboy"related.
it all comes to the culture of the indonesians- budaya "gengsi" dan "jaim".

    Hi everyone...

Well, hi there mr. Robin! It is nice to see you back on my blog. For those of you who don't know, Robin is one of the "bosses" at asian-siren site. One of my favorite boys :)

Robin, I think I need to address this one question of yours very specifically. Look, Adam Yurman is one of the best photographers in the world. Heck, in my book, he IS the best. Hands down. When it comes to quality of work, I will never ever say any differently when it comes to Adam Yurman.

Everything that I have gone through is a personal learning experience and neither me nor Adam are prepared for it. But I will always respect the quality of pictures he produced.

Now about being "a bit negative" on Playboy Indonesia? I think I am very negative when it comes to Playboy in Indonesia. My personal opinion is that I do not believe that Playboy should be in Indonesia. Period.

But I don't believe in cencorship and do not believe they should be banned. I do however reserve the right to be very unhappy with their plan to be in my country.

Again, this is just my personal opinion. ;)

    Hi Tiara,

All I want to say that you should do whatever you think is right. You're a smart adult woman and you have all the right to expose your flesh. I'm not into this skin baring business, and I won't call them art, but again, it's your skin, your body, therefore, your business as long as you're not harming it.

However, I feel that it would be unwise for you to expose yourself like that when you're Indonesian,it's not because you should stick to Indonesian culture or anything, it's more because of Indonesians are not ready for it. A lot of them are poorly educated and they are easily provoked by certain organisations that have hidden agendas, and they use this controversy as a tool.

And also, looking at the barbaric and primitive culture of those 'religious'Indonesians in approaching everything with violence, it might cause harm to your family and I bet you'd want to avoid that.

I think a lot of these so called 'religious' Indonesians are bloody hypocrites banning everything they called pornography when a lot of them are out there buying for porn dvds that have less publication.

Banning playboy?? look around us, you can find lots of local tabloids with bikini cladded girls on the cover, why don't they deal with those first? or the porn dvds. If they don't like Playboy, simply ignore it and don't buy it, it's as simple as that, that's where the moral test is.

And you know what, the more you try to prevent this stuff, the more people will be interested. It's the nature of human to want something that they can't get. As a result, look at the crime rates in Indonesia that are related to sexual abuse to women. The more incredible thing is that they blame all of this acts on women, whom they said wearing clothes that are to sexy!!!

Anyway, that's all from me. All the best for you Tiara.

    Cheers

    Dear Tiara,

Now I completely respect your choice of not being on Playboy Indonesia, I also understand why you not think Playboy should be Indonesia, but what is the meaning of freedom of press, which you also believe in and what is the meaning of democracy?
Now Indonesia is putting forward the Anti Pornography Bill, which will not allow kissing or unmarried couples to walk together in public...it will regulate personal appearance, expression and ethnical heritage...

What are your thoughts on this?

Also please consider that there are many minorities in Indonesia, why should Bali an island predominantly Hindu loose their cultural heritage, arts, history, and human rights???

Also why is there soo much illegal porn in Indonesia? Because people like to see and watch it!!! This is about personal choice!!! I also agree that no Muslim should have to read Playboy, but again it is choice, choice is what makes a real democracy, everything else becomes fundamentalism...

Just some thought from a concerned Bali lover ;-)

Let me start by saying many of the previous comments do not speak for the majority of Westerners.

Tiara, you always amaze me with your insightful views. While I wish you would consider doing Playboy style photoshoots in the future, I also understand your reasons for wanting to move on. You now have the ability to write your own ticket in the modeling world, and you should take it any direction you choose.

I agree with you about introducing Playboy to Indonesia. While I think it should be in Indonesia and you don't, we both agree that it should be decided by the consumers, not activitst. If people want it there, they will buy it. If not, Playboy will move on.

Tiara, keep up the great work and don't let anyone change you. You're smart and beautiful, which is the best combination of all. See you at Asian-sirens.

considering that most indonesian muslims are english-illiterate, im gonna write this in indonesian, so that those hypocrite dogs are able to read and grasp the message:
sekedar info aja, jumlah perkosaan di negara2 timur tengah yg notabene bersorban & berjilbab itu jauh lebih tinggi drpd perkosaan di rest of the world!!
mending juga instropeksi diri..kalo emang ngerasa diri sendiri tu bodinya jelek, gendut, bau, dan bloon (ya iya lah bloon, kaga ada oksigen yg masuk kepala!), dan ahirnya milih utk membungkus diri dari rambut ampe jempol, ya jangan maksain orang laen ikutan juga dong, BANGSAATT!!!
tentang ruu pornoaksi, kenapa harus maksain pake standar agama ttt?! standar tiap individu beda2 bo..yg sexy menurut 1 org, ga tentu dianggep sexy menurut yg laen. lagian, kalo yg porno itu otak si cowo yg berfantasi, kenapa harus cw sexynya yg dihukum?! sama kasusnya dgn klo org muslim lagi puasa, kenapa non-muslim nga boleh makan di umum?! elo2 harus bisa pada nahan diri dong! katanye pahalanye gede..makanye mending juga pada mikir, jing…jangan suka maksain aturan & standar sendiri. soalnya klo ada non-muslim yg berani maksain suatu aturan, si muslim lah org nomer 1 yg protes…klo punya, otak dipake bang…jgn cuma cuap2 sok bermoral sebab mulut loe BAUUU!!! VIVA TIARA!!

1988), saya ingat betul alasan utama adanya (baca: diciptakannya) hukum: agar semuanya tertib.

So, selamat datang era globalisasi (whether we like it or not; it's coming anyway).
(bandingkan dgn Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mahatma Gandhi, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Alfa E., JK. Rowling ... :))

As a straight young man, I always have a natural interest to see beautiful body of beautiful female. Female nudity always "inspire" my hormones "to do something".
However, I found that there are several negative side effects, for males, if they are exposured to female nudity.
    1. Short term exposure can make some guys loose their rationality. ( Remember Raping, Peeping, incest, other sex abuse )
    2. Long term excessive exposure can lower the works of male hormones, and finally can bring men to a condition of Low sexual capability.
    3. mass exposure can bring a society, in the most extreme condition, to a "Biological disaster of human race".

As a father, I have a strong and rational reasons to ban my Children from being exposured with Playboy magazine or others. It is better for my children to be exposured with scientific magazines, such as Natonal Geographic.
